“Tell me about yourself” is a routing question. The listener is deciding what to ask next. Your job is to hand them a relevant map, not an autobiography.
Keep it near one minute
Forty-five to ninety seconds is enough for most screens. If you go longer, you are choosing the topics for them and usually choosing too many. Stop while they still have an obvious follow-up.
Use a simple order
- Present: what you do now, or what you study, in one sentence.
- Proof: one project or job that is closest to the role.
- Direction: the kind of role you are preparing for, and why it follows from the proof.
What to leave out
Leave out childhood, a full list of tools, and a speech about passion that does not name any work. Leave out criticism of an employer. If the proof point uses “we” for the entire sentence, rewrite it until your action is visible.
How to practice
